"Ozymandias" by Percy Shelley (1818)

I met a traveller from an antique land,
Who said—“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal, these words appear:
My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.”

Ozymandias is the Greek name for Pharaoh Ramses II

lyrics

Mirror, mirror, on the wall / show me cities rise and fall
The world I’ve built, the things I’ve done / how long will my praises be sung?
Beings of vanity and of lust / show me man return to dust
Speak to me in silver tongues / tell me, am I good enough?

Behold I am the king of kings
God among ye mortal beings
Yet still a man and doomed to fear
Entropy everywhere
When all is said there will be none
To think of us when we are gone
Trunkless legs we stand upon
A remnant of our Babylon

Mirror, mirror, tell me please / where this constant struggle leads
Will my dream, my empire stand / or fall lost under shifting sand?
What’s the purpose of this then / if all we do will someday end
If all our passions, works and glories / never ‘til tomorrow stand

Behold I am the king of kings
God among ye mortal beings
Yet still a man and doomed to fear
Emptiness everywhere
Sands of time that fall and drain
Form deserts stretching far away
As all the world we know decays
Footprints in the sand will fade

Beings of vanity and lust / show me man return to dust
speak to me in silver tongues / tell me, am I good enough?
Mirror, mirror, on the wall / show me cities rise and fall
the world I’ve built, the things I’ve done / how long will my praise be sung?
